Screening for H.E. Students

Are you at, or going to university and do you think you might be dyslexic?

If you are dyslexic or have any form of disability then you are eligible to apply for Disabled Students Allowance. This is a non means tested grant which will fund support for you during your studies including IT equipment and non medical helpers support. To get the grant you must provide evidence of your disability. For an individual with dyslexia this evidence must be a written assessment by an educational psychologist. Getting this evidence can sometimes be costly.

Many universities and educational establishments use alternate funding to make these assessments free to their students. However, there are instances where this is not the case, such as some colleges, workplace degrees, distance learning courses etc. When this happens the only person left to pay for the evidence of dyslexia is yourself. When put against the level of support you may receive, an assessment can be well worth this investment. However, if you are not sure if you are dyslexic, spending anywhere between three and five hundred pounds on an assessment seems like an expensive gamble. It is however, possible to reduce this risk by undertaking a screening test, prior to your assessment to find whether you have a high probability of being dyslexic or not.

What will the screening tell me?

This test is designed specifically to establish the probability of dyslexia in an individual; it does not attempt further analysis, eg IQ or intellectual ability.

What will happen on the day?

On the day you will meet with a qualified advisor, who will discuss with you your current situation and answer any questions you have relating to dyslexia. They will then guide you through the testing process and then explain the results and talk about any further action.

What happens after the test?

Every persons situation is unique, and your advisor will take this into account when working with you to find the best direction. You may wish to know about:

  • Educational options
  • Specialist tuition
  • Available services
  • IT solutions
